International policy

Dutch university education and research is not only qualitatively of a high standard but also very internationally oriented. All Dutch research universities are represented in international networks and cooperate with universities from around the world. Dutch universities offer their students and staff an international environment and actively stimulate them to spend some time abroad. International offices provide students with advice, and increasingly universities offer joint degree programmes with prestigious universities abroad. University curricula are topical and developed with view to international developments, taking into account the diversity of the student population. These aspects of an international education come together in international classrooms, in which Dutch and international students study together, taught by international and Dutch staff according to internationally topical curricula.

The Dutch research universities are committed to sustainable development and poverty reduction. They actively support the millenium development goals. The Dutch research universities believe that cooperation with developing countries is not a one-sided undertaking but, like any international cooperation, a mutual engagement benefiting all partners.

Aims

The Dutch research universities enjoy an international reputation for excellent research and teaching. They are actively engaged in positioning themselves internationally and attach great importance to international cooperation and mobility of students and staff. The shared aim of the Dutch research universities is to maintain and enhance their international position in both teaching and research. This includes attracting the best students and researchers, taking part in leading international networks and offering students an international academic education.

International students and researchers choose the Dutch research universities for their high-quality, English-language education, their excellent research, the close connection between education and research and the numerous opportunities to pursue a career in research, for example the tenure track system. Moreover, the Dutch research universities are internationally well connected and co-operate internationally on a large scale. The global presence of the Dutch research universities is based on these strenghts which they seek to make even more widely known by developing promotional material, visiting other countries and cooperating with other organisations of the Dutch academic system.
